Bat Proofing Toolkit for Singapore Homes

Learn humane, safe, and effective strategies to keep your living spaces secure and bat-free in our tropical environment. This toolkit aims to help home owners understand bat exclusion.

Bats

Understanding Our Flying Neighbors

In Singapore, bats play a vital role in our ecosystem as natural pollinators and pest controllers. While they help maintain the balance of our local flora, they occasionally seek shelter in residential properties when their natural habitats are disturbed or when they find easy access to roof eaves. Common species like the Lesser Dog-faced Fruit Bat are frequently seen around residential areas. Understanding their behavior is the first step toward humane management as they are generally non-aggressive. Our toolkit is designed to bridge this gap, offering humane ways to encourage bats to find more appropriate wild roosting sites while ensuring your home remains a sanctuary. Bats are strictly protected species under the Wildlife Act, they are also possible carrier of rabies so always seek help for exclusion and removal.

🏠

The Roofline & Eaves

Check for gaps where the roof meets the walls. In Singapore homes, common entry points include fascia boards, soffits, and loosely fitted tiles.

Guano & Rub Marks

Look for small, dark droppings on ledges or walls. Dark, oily stains around a gap indicate a high-traffic entry point used by roosting colonies. Bat droppings often hit the wall at an angle when they defecate as opposed to straight down for birds.

Vents & Louvers

Attic vents or kitchen exhaust louvers are prime real estate for bats as they love warm roosts. Ensure screens are intact and no panels have warped due to humidity.

Utility Penetrations

Check where AC conduits, piping, or electrical wires enter the wall. Bats can squeeze through gaps as small as 1 cm (roughly the width of a thumb).

Step-by-Step Bat Exclusion

Exclusion is the most humane and effective method to remove bats from your home. This process allows bats to leave on their own but prevents them from returning.

01

Identify and Seal Secondary Gaps

Thoroughly inspect your property for all possible entry points. Seal every gap, crack, or crevice larger than 1cm except for the main entry and exit point currently used by the colony. This forces all bats to use a single dedicated exit.

02

Install One-Way Exclusion Devices

Attach a one-way valve, bat cone or exclusion netting over the remaining main entry point. These devices allow bats to drop out and fly away in the evening but prevent them from crawling back inside when they return from foraging.

03

Monitor Exit Activity

Leave the exclusion devices in place for at least 5 to 7 days. Observe the area at dusk to ensure no more bats are emerging. It is critical to confirm all bats, especially any flightless pups, have left the roost before proceeding. Do note that if you exclude the mothers, the babies will be trapped inside and die, causing terrible odors and a different set of pest issues.

04

Final Sealing and Sanitization

Once you are certain the roost is empty, remove the exclusion devices and permanently seal the entry hole with durable materials. Finally, perform a deep clean and sanitization of the area to remove droppings. Bat droppings can carry fungal spores, so it is advisable to wear gloves and mask during cleaning. Mist lightly, avoid sweeping and stirring up dry guano (bat droppings). Always bag waste securely.
